Fabio Staffini
Technical Director - Specialist in Environmental and Engineering Geology

He graduated cum laude in Geological Sciences at the Department of Earth Sciences in Milan’s ‘Università degli Studi’. In 1992 he qualified as professional geologist and since 1996 he has been part of the ‘Ordine dei Geologi’ (Institute of Geologists) in Lombardy.

He has mainly developed his professional career in the field of public works, especially in the sectors of large civil engineering works, transportation (roads, tunneling, underground works), hydro-geological instability and territorial planning.

Since 2002 he has been collaborating with SOIL srl on several projects, principally following projects regarding applied geology and hydro-geology, seismic issues, geotechnical investigations and soil and rock characterisation within major infrastructure projects (also supporting geotechnical consultancies), both onshore and offshore.

In February 2008 his relationship with SOIL srl turned into a form of ‘exclusive collaboration’, and he was appointed Technical Director under Article n. 53, co. 1 of D.P.R. 554/99.

In his professional activity he has gained experience especially within applied geology, in the geotechnical and environmental geology sectors with specific attention to territorial issues of hilly and mountainous areas.

He has followed training and adjournment courses regarding the stability of soil and rock slopes, river and stream hydraulics, numerical modelling and seismic geotechnics.

He is Security Coordinator under Article 98 of D.Lgs. 81/08 and s.m.i..


His main specialization fields are:

  • structural and geomechanical geology;
  • seismic geology and geotechnics;
  • hydrology and hydraulics for territorial defense;
  • planning and works management for rockfall protection projects;
  • planning and works management for projects in landslide areas;
  • geological and hydro-geological studies supporting territorial and environmental planning;
  • environmental impact studies;
  • expert witnessing in civil and criminal proceedings;
  • technical and administrative management of tenders and contracts for Public Authorities.

Costa Concordia Parbuckling

For the purposes of the safe removal of the Costa Concordia wreck, SOIL Srl has been involved into all aspects concerning the geological and geotechnical design and assistance for the construction of the foundation structures.

The Costa Concordia Wreck Removal Project foresaw in the first stage the rotation of the wreck to its vertical position (parbuckling phase) and subsequently its re-floating by means of the installation of steel caissons on both sides of the ship.

The parbuckling required the construction of underwater anchoring structures on the landward side of wreck and the installation of three submerged platforms for its temporary support in vertical position on the seaward side. The structures were built respectively at water depths of 5 ÷ 10m and 40 ÷ 50m below sea level. Drilled steel piles (D = 2m) were designed for the platforms foundations.
